Summary/Abstract: The act of reading can be perceived as a complex association of processes, a fast, efficient process, a comprehensive process, an interactive, strategic, flexible process, a process aimed at a final goal, an evaluative process, a learning process and, not least, a linguistic process. This study presents the role and place of reading in the lessons of learning Romanian as a foreign language. Placing the emphasis on oral communication, as well as a dogmatic approach, sometimes superficial to the text, reveals gaps in international students’ reading skills, indispensable skills for future specialists. We identify the relationship between L1 and L2 reading and how much we can rely on the transfer of reading competence from one language to another?
