Summary/Abstract: The article presents the issue of reading as a phenomenon inscribed in socio-cultural mechanisms. Attention was paid to both individual contacts with culture and its reception in connection with social interactions. The role of the library in the promotion of culture, but also its educational and social tasks have been emphasised. While the traditional view of the library was focused on providing information services and access to literature, the latest solutions show that greater benefits can be achieved by expanding its functions, especially when access to sources is increasingly provided via electronic databases. Therefore, it seems that libraries, apart from their traditional activities, should implement programmes aimed at cultural activation and social integration, supporting the development of cultural and social capital.
