Summary/Abstract: In 2020 the Joseph von Eichendorff Centre for Libraries, Media, Culture and Research in Opole celebrated its 20th anniversary. Therefore, the aim was to show the genesis, history, and present state of the Centre. For this purpose, the existing documents and sources in the institution files, as well as monographs, articles and internet sources were used. Through its four areas of activity (the Polish-German Library, the Archive of Periodicals and Book Publications, the Archive of Musical Culture in Silesia, and the Ministry for National and Ethnic Minorities), this institution is active in the field of Polish-German reading culture, Polish-German reconciliation, preservation of the multicultural (Polish, German, Moravian, Jewish) heritage in Upper Silesia, support, especially in the area of faith, for national and ethnic minorities (mainly the German and Roma minorities) in the Opole Diocese. To meet the challenges of the present times, since 2010 the Centre has undergone transformations to better fulfil its tasks in the multicultural piece of land of Upper Silesia. The conclusions indicate that the activities in the field of culture and ministry, especially in the context of minorities, are complementary and can mutually enrich each other, thus contributing to reconciliation and openness to what is different.
