Summary/Abstract: This essay discusses Jacka Baczaka Notes from Night Shifts. The phenomenon of death, especially of the elderly and chronically ill, is analyzed in a multidimensional way. The subject of prose play the role of a kind of Socratic “midwife” of death, who an empathic way tries to enter its impenetrable depth. Attention is also drawn to the epiphanic experience of the Other and an attempt to interiorize the issue of dying and death as one of the most important human existential experiences.
