The contribution of immigrants to increasing city innovation: The example of Wroclaw

Summary/Abstract: Research results in many countries (especially in the United States of America) confirm that there is a significant correlation between the presence of immigrants and the innovation of their host countries. The purpose of the article is to examine such a relationship in Poland on the example of the city of Wroclaw. The measure of innovation used in the article is the number of patent applications. Using the data of the Patent Office of the Republic of Poland for the period of 1989–2020, all the patent applications from Wroclaw were analyzed in terms of the number and participation of foreigners. It was found that the contribution of immigrants to innovation of Wroclaw varies depending on the technological area of the surveyed inventions. Results also show that foreigners did not contribute to increasing the city innovation, but they had an impact on the development of the electrical engineering industry in Wroclaw.
