Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to analyze the conflict between evil and good in N.V. Gogol's short story Viy. Contrary to the traditional vision according to which the good promoted by faith and religion must come out victorious every time, in Gogol's work we have the opportunity to observe how evil takes the place of good, becoming a necessary tool in seeing justice done. The analysis of the fictional universe and its representative symbols relied on mythological approaches. Thus, the actions of the protagonist Khoma Brut are analyzed from several perspectives, focusing on the crime he commits, thus disturbing the universal balance. Even if Viy appears only at the end of the work, he has the role of restoring the universal order disrupted by the crime. The subconscious can be explored by analyzing the actions committed by an individual in relation to environment and knowledge.
