Summary/Abstract: Western researchers and scholars usually focus more on the geopolitical aspects of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea by discussing its nuclear capabilities, the Juche ideology, and its dictatorial regime. Furthermore, on the rare occasions when Western scholars make a study of North Korean literature, they only reference the dissident literature, which helps create a stereotypical image of the North Korean individual. The current research presents to the European public the 4 stages of evolution in the North Korean literature and how it is linked to the Juche ideology. Lastly, we will use Paek Nam-nyong‘s novel, Friend: A Novel from North Korea, in order to showcase a contemporary North Korean writer’s image of the Korean woman and the Hidden Hero Campaign.
