Summary/Abstract: The objective of this work is to define the roles, nature and information exchanges that are the effect of the work of a museum as an institution: the exhibit and exhibit catalogue, but also the museum venue itself and the events that are linked to exhibits. The author conducted a review of academic literature, and an analysis of the exhibition concept and the exhibition catalogue in the context of information technology. It was confirmed that in the existing typology of information sources undocumentable sources, such as exhibits, have not been satisfactorily analysed. Note was taken of the relationship between the content, structure and goal of exhibitions; and the documentary function (i.e. the academic publication). Despite the formal and institutional connections, the exhibition and the exhibition catalogue constitute independent sources of information. The common denominator of both these sources is the museum collection itself, whereas the catalogue as a rule does not document the function of an exhibit as an event per se.
