Summary/Abstract: Citizenship education holds an important place in academic education; it should be cultivated and enforced in any democratic context. Europe is currently facing significant challenges. Socio-economic problems, violence, extremism and lack of trust in democratic processes are among the greatest threats to peace, democracy, freedom and tolerance. Education and training can help counter such menace by fostering mutual respect and promoting fundamental values; citizenship education has a special part to play in this regard and, across Europe, there are high expectations from it. Citizenship education is a fluid concept since the understanding of its essence and aims varies among countries and changes over time. In pandemic times this type of education was limited by online mediated contacts and theory prevailed over practice; hence face-to face and group-work activities are required for catching up with the remaining tasks.
