Summary/Abstract: Travel literature gradually took shape, as Romanian intellectuals went throughout the 19th century to Blaj, Cluj, Rome, Vienna, sometimes even further. But from an early age there was a natural curiosity for the state of affairs over the mountains, from the country to which they felt indestructibly connected and which represents them as a nation. In this context, the public topos captured in their testimonies, especially the convivial ones - the hotel, the restaurant, the terrace, the pub, the brewery, the confectionery - take shape and are gradually complicated by the details concerning them: location, architecture, atmosphere inside them, human types highlighted, all summing up particular functions and meanings.
