Summary/Abstract: In the context of the nineteenth century, the literary field of the Romanian culture had known profound changes, having as background deep transformation in the social and political context. Literature took its major themes from the national history, emphasised by knew literary species, like the epos. On this social and cultural basis, the Romanian writer, man of culture and political diplomate Ion Heliade Radulescu opened a knew perspective of regarding the crisis of the social establishment, that fortold a knew era – the modern period. His view, both in the literary field and in life, is influenced by the prophetic dimensions. The aspect of his prophetic ideas was taken from the Bible, while the way he embodied it in his writings is modern. Heliade Radulescu was driven by an inner prophetic authority, according to modern times, different from the biblical period, where the authentic prophet was called by God to speak of or for Him. Heliade Radulescu tried to illustrate the crisis the Romanian societiy was living in the first decades and in the middle of the nineteenth century, and trying to bring sollutions. As a political man, he had political honnours but, during and after the 1848 Revolution, he became exiled and his fate started to resemble more and more with the fate of biblical prophets, often rejected and misunderstood by their people, in times of crisis. His utopic project, his attempts to create a new establieshment of the society, based on the foreign models he had, especially French, ended sometimes to be criticised by his contemporaries and by the literary critics mostly after his death. Nevertheless, the Romanian culture ows him, at the wake of the modern period, the contribution in the various domains he tackled.
