Summary/Abstract: French for university purposes (FOU) is increasingly attracting the interest of French-language teachers. FOU is part of the French for Specific Objective (FOS) approach, the essential dimension of which is the use of the language in a professional context. The FOU is intended for students of all disciplines, required to do part of their studies in the French language. It is a context that prompts the teacher to develop skills in analyzing university situations on several levels: institutional and cultural, collecting field data and proposing didactic materials to develop university competence. The establishment of such a device may encounter logistical and pedagogical difficulties but, at the same time, the students' interest in French university life represents a challenge and a boost for the teacher who must give the French for university purposes the chance to succeed.
