Summary/Abstract: This article characterises the achievements and specificity of research into the Polish cultural history of the interwar period. The author outlines the differences between sociologists and histo- rians in exploring/approaching cultural history. The text consists of two parts – the introductory first and the main one, presenting the contribution of Polish sociologists to the reflection on the history of culture. The introduction outlines the emergence of cultural history as an independent subdiscipline within historical science and briefly discusses the profile of interests and the study’s theoretical foundation. Attention is given to the most eminent representatives of the subdiscipline from the three centres with the most outstanding achievements in this field; Kraków, Warsaw, and Lviv. Then, the text presents the research interests and theoretical declarations of Stanisław Kot, Jan Ptaśnik, Kazimierz Hartleb, and Stanisław Łempicki. The second part juxtaposes the work of histo- rians and sociologists; Stefan Czarnowski and Jan Stanisław Bystroń, who, in the author’s opinion, contributed both valuable findings and an original research approach to the cultural history of the period in question. The sociologists’ broad specialisation, diverse methods, and interdisciplinary approach were conducive to a comprehensive, holistic understanding of culture and its history. The article does not exhaust the subject. It signals the common areas of reflection and the fluidity (lack of impassable borders) between disciplines that characterised Polish humanities in the first half of the twentieth century.
