Summary/Abstract: The article presents a detailed analysis of the images of the Bar Confederation sketched by Władysław Smoleński in two versions of his Dzieje narodu polskiego published in 1898 in Kraków (uncensored text) and in Warsaw (censored text), and in a schoolbook Historia Pol- ski [History of Poland] issued in 1921, after Poland regained independence. Explaining differences between them, the author pays attention to the circumstances of their creation and Smoleński’s ideological and political attitude as well as his views on the social function of history. Particular visions of the confederation are confronted with Tadeusz Korzon’s views and also Kraków historian’s opinions: Józef Szujski, Michał Bobrzyński, and Anatol Lewicki.
