Adolf Sonnenfeld’s Pan Twardowski: Some Observations on the Theatrical Musical Version of the Legend

Summary/Abstract: The subject of the analysis consists in the sources concerning the balletPan Twardowski by Adolf Sonnenfeld. On the basis of the surviving descriptionof the performance from 1898 and the piano excerpts of selected ballet scenes,conclusions were drawn about the Warsaw composer’s work as another variantof the popular Polish legend. The important research context is a reflection onthe popular music culture of the second half of the 19th century and contemporarystyles of reception.
