Summary/Abstract: This paper is an attempt at finding answers to the following questions: How can the term gay crime novel be understood? Has such a sub-genre been established in Poland? Is it a sub-genre of crime fiction or rather gay novel? The author examines works by such writers as Edward Pasewicz (Śmierć w darkroomie [The Death in the Darkroom]), Michał Witkowski (Drwal [The Woodcutter], Zbrodniarz i dziewczyna [The Criminal and the Girl]), and Andrzej Selerowicz (Kryptonim „Hiacynt” [Codename Hyacinth], Zbrodnia, której nie było [The Crime that Never Was]). The analysis of the works is focused on the use of the crime scheme and selected writ-ing techniques in the context of the most popular strategies typical of crime fiction convention (e.g. a shift towards a socially engaged novel, urban space exploration, psychologisation of protagonists) as well as the most important characteristics of naturalistic novel (different ideas of presenting social groups).
