Summary/Abstract: The present article aims to analyze the themes of life and death in Ion Călugăru’s works, represented by the Freudian concepts of Eros and Thanatos. While Eros is the force of life and creation, Thanatos corresponds to the destructive and aggressive impulses. The characters are driven either by the instinct towards life, Eros, or towards destruction, Thanatos, and their life is shaped by the permanent conflict between these two instincts. In Ion Călugăru’s works, Thanatos is always connected to the instinct of life as Eros is depicted as a subtle but certain slide to death.
