THE READINGS OF A LUCID INTELLECTUAL

Summary/Abstract: Camil Petrescu innovates the Romanian novel by creating a typology of character- the lucid intellectual. In this character’s life, reading occupies a leading place. This paper follows the epic thread of the novels „Ultima noapte de dragoste, întâia noapte de război” ("The Last Night of Love, the First Night of War") and „Patul lui Procust” ("Procust's Bed"), from the perspective of the main character's readings. In the first mentioned work, Ștefan Gheorghidiu is giving reading instructions to his wife or constantly ordering the volumes that aroused his interest. In „Patul lui Procust”, Fred Vasilescu reads Ladima's letters to Emilia, thus finding out about his friend’s destiny.
