Summary/Abstract: Tunja is one of the more famous cities of the Kingdom of New Granada, especially in terms of the art of the colonial period. Churches, monasteries and grand mansions with magnificent, ornate stone facades were built throughout the century, giving shape to a town that has been called by researcher Morales Folguera “Athens of the Renaissance in the Kingdom of New Granada”. The artistic atmosphere of the city quickly attracted numerous artists. The first European painter to imprint himself in the history of the Kingdom of New Granada was Alonso de Narváez coming from Seville, who settled in the town of Tunja a few years after its foundation. Although the painter was created the miraculous image of Our Lady of Chiquinquirá, whose fame and cult soon transcended the borders of New Granada, little information concerning his life has survived to our times. The paper presents Narváez’ reconstructed family tree and new details from the artist’s biography. His artistic work is presented in the context of broad social history of the city as well as in a micro-historical perspective related to community life. An important element for outlining the religious history of Tunja was showing it as a centre of the cult of Our Lady of Chiquinquirá, a miracle-making image. The artist’s life was reconstructed based on archival sources, such as the painter’s will, notarial records related to several lawsuits, local censuses and other official documents.
