Summary/Abstract: The article clarifies the differences between competency and competence and the types of competences. Special attention is paid to the social competences as being among the most important in pedagogical activities. Their nature, dimensions and contents are discussed. The focus is on pedagogical empathy which is central to the emotional and social competency of contemporary teachers.
