Summary/Abstract: In this thesis, I examine the phenomenon of a vertical coordination in the agri-food industry in Hungary. First, I point out the substantive problems and errors that occurred in the privatization of agriculture and food industry and in the course of restitution. I give a picture of the prospering agro-industrial complex of the 1980’s, as it was falling into its worthless pieces towards the end of the decade. I also show the transformation and reorganisation of chain-loops in the verticum of Hungarian Agribusiness after the 1990’s. Furthermore, I draw attention to the differences between particular groups, in respect of their degree of concentration, advocacy skills and financial strength. It is a very important issue, because the resulting disharmony not only weakens the competitiveness and profitability of the actors in the chain, but it is also jeopardizing the future and viability of the whole Agribusiness. Finally, I draw conclusions as to the cause of the rare appearance of a vertical integration in the agri-food industry. Using the knowledge and experience accumulated in time of the ‘old regime’ and combining them with structures and procedures of the new market, I open up some new vistas, which can create the longterm vision of a more successful era for those people, who live on the agricultural ‘verticum’, and also for those farmers, food entrepreneurs and dealers, who have a strong faith in it.
