Summary/Abstract: In Slovak literature, and particularly in the development of the novel, historicity had the legitimizing function of a modern political nation. The novel as a genre of serious historicity repeatedly attempted to create what Ján Števček has called the novelistic situation. At the same time, there has existed in Slovak literature a strong tradition of the ironical novel, which has however been long overlooked. After World War II, there emerged a new type of existential literature, for which historicity is not a genre issue, but a problem of the ontological strategy of the text. This type of literature forms the basis of the value-oriented perspective on Slovak literature after 1945.
