Summary/Abstract: Mesopotamia, the area between the rivers Tigris and Euphrates, a highly fertile land in the steppe, is in the collective mind, the Garden of Eden. From earliest Antiquity the area had been home to a sequence of important city-states ruled by kings. How did the ideological basis of power express itself in this landscape? How did the landscape become part of this ideology? Could it be the perfect society with an ideal form of government?
