Summary/Abstract: During World War II, German fascists committed genocide against non- Germanic peoples, particularly the Jews. Many innocent people were driven from their homes, many were physically and mentally tortured, and large numbers were shot, hanged or burned to death. During the war of aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina, a more appalling genocide was committed against the Bosniacs. Serb nationalists relentlessly persecuted the Bosniacs, tortured them in camps and prisons, and killed large numbers of them. To those who planned and carried out this genocide, the Bosniacs were “guilty” simply by virtue of the fact that they had always been Bosniacs .and that they were Muslims by religious conviction. This paper analyzes the statements and conduct of the war criminals tried in Nuremberg in 1945 and those being tried in The Hague. There is no difference between the statements of the Germans who planned and execcuted genocide as compared with the conduct and statements of the Serbs who planned and carried out genocide. The majority of the perpetrators express no sense of guilt or remorse for their crimes. They even believe that they are not to blame at all for the atrocities they committed, since they do not see them as crimes but as “acts of justice.” As they put it, they were merely protecting the Serbian nation from “attack and persecution by the Turks.” Forgiveness is to be expected only if those who planned and perppetrated genocide against the Bosniacs are sincerely repentant, and express their remorse in public, asking for forgiveness. In cases where they do so, forgiveness can be expected, but it is psychologically impossible to forget the deep wound of genocide.
