Summary/Abstract: French policy concerning the expansion of the European Union in the 1990s seems to have alternatively blown hot and cold. Using French sources composed mainly of the presidential archives of Jacque Chirac, we will examine France's policy concerning European integration under Mitterand and Chirac. Between 1990 and 2004, the question of the integration of Hungary in the European Union was raised. The two major dates are 31st March 1994, the day Hungary presented its Eu membership request and 1st May 2004, the day it joined the Eu. How important was this expansion for France and in particular its inclusion of Hungary in Europe? What were Hungary's assets according to France? What expectations did France have towards Hungary as a candidate? In this study we try to answer to these questions.
