Summary/Abstract: Personal data protection in the context of criminal law enforcement activities is receiving increased attention at the European Union level, as European regulations, recommendations, and case law in this area are becoming increasingly complex. In this article, we will briefly examine the key aspects found in the EU relevant regulations, in the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union, in the European literature and in the documents of the institutions and bodies of the European Union reflecting the recent developments concerning the protection of personal data with regard to its processing for the purposes of the prevention, investigation, detection or prosecution of criminal offences or the execution of criminal penalties, including the safeguarding against and the prevention of threats to public security.
