Eine Bemerkung zum Genus
A remark on Grammatical Gender

Summary/Abstract: The present paper deals with the question ofwhether the category ofsubstantival gender is a grammatical or a lexical category. The following criterion is suggested: ifthere is at least one declension paradigm am¬bivalent in gender, then this category is lexical; in the contrary case it is grammatical. Examples are taken from Lithuanian, Latvian, Russian, Old and Modern Czech. In conclusion, the typological implications ofsuch a conception ofgender are briefly mentioned.
