Jánosik 21. Comments on the Dramaturgy of the Reconditioning of the First Slovak Feature Film

Summary/Abstract: The author of the paper gives an account of the reconditioning of the first Slovak feature silent film Jdnosk 21, which was shot by the Siakef brothers in 1921. The author acknowledges the work of Ivan Rumanovsky, who not only ,,discovered" the film material but is also to be given credit for finding the missing film frames. Ivan Stadt-rucker was among those who took an active part in the preparation and implementation of this outstanding project of the reconditioning of Jdnosik 21. He narrates and explains the working procedure (1971 - 1975), and in particular, he details the reconditioning work on the film's visual component and audio component. In addition, he elucidates the underlying conditions for the film reconditioning and notes that the project was implemented in the premises of Bratislava Television and not Statny film Koliba labo¬ratories, as one would expect. The reconditioned Jdnosik 21 was made on double-track 35/35 mm and Statny film Koliba (Koliba State Film Studios) made a combined print from the double-track and by sound-to-video re-recording, the film acquired a ,,historic" sound and, ironically, the sound veracity of the originally silent film was enhanced. A renewed premiere of the film could be watched in parallel on cinema and TV screens (1975). The film was shown on Bratislava TV after making a video recording of it, which allowed for a different electronic colouring of the individual film sequences in line with the then usage.
