Todor F. Chipev’s Russian Publications

Summary/Abstract: The publisher Todor F. Chipev was a renaissance personality who has greatly contributed to Bulgarian culture. A large portion of the activities of his publishing house was dedicated to the publication of translations of foreign language literature. Russian literature has a special place. The Bulgarian archives preserve materials which proved that Todor F. Chipev was a representative and supplier of Rus- sian literature, distributed illegally by the Russophiles in Bulgaria during the rule of Stefan Stambolov (1887-1894). The first literary work by a foreign author that Todor F. Chipev printed was L. N. Tolstoy‘s book Emil Zola and Alexander Dumas (1896). This was the first publication of a book by Tolstoy in Bulgaria. It was followed up by another work of L. N. Tolstoy – on the Sex Problem (The kreutzer Sonata) (1903). The great interest of the Bulgarian readers for Russian classic literature was the main reason for the publication of the works of I. Turgenev, M. Gorki, A. S. Pushkin (in 1935 was the first publication in Bulgaria), of M. Lermontov. From 1930 on the publishing house started to print many works by contemporary Russian authors, including books for children. To realize the translation of these and many other books by Russian authors Todor F. Chipev invited some of the best translators. The books printed by his publishing house were outstanding for their artistic design and the use of print graphics from the original publications. After T. F. Chipev‘s death in 1944 these activities were continued by his sons. Among them we should note Philip Chipev who had contributed greatly to the further development of the publishing house. Due to his contacts with the Moscow publishing house Mezhdunarodnaya kniga M. Sholohov‘s novel The Quiet Don (1947) was translated and published and also the works of Alexei Tolstoy (1947).
