Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to shed light on one of the aspects of the process of Bulgaria’s sovietization, namely the reconstruction of her foreign trade activity which began in September 1944 and was concluded with the second wave of cadre purges carried out in the foreign trade system in the late forties and early fifties. Considered also are a number of such essential problems, neglected so far in historiography, as those of historical continuity, of the conditions in which Bulgaria made attempts to surmount foreign economic isolation and the methods by which was realized the geographic reorientation of trade, the fate of the “old” Bulgarian experts, etc. In writing the paper use has been made both of the already existing research and documentary publications and of material from the former Central Party Archives, from the records of the Council of Ministers and the Bulgarian National Bank, kept at the Central State Archives, the Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and from the Moscow Archives: the Foreign Policy Archives of the Russian Federation, the State Archives of the Russian Federation, the Centre for the Safekeeping of Soviet Documentation and the Russian State Archives of Soviet Party Information.
