Summary/Abstract: Mircea Zaciu is mostly known as academic professor, a creator of the “School” of Cluj, or as an appreciated literary historian and critic. His debut as a writer is related to the prose text “Șobolanii”, followed by novellas as “Unde sfârșește pustiul”, “Pasagerii de pe corabia beată”, “Semnele păcii, “Întâmplări din casa cu plopi”, and “Tovarășii lui Nikos”. He is seduced by the idea of writing movie scenarios, publishing the scenarios for the movies “Amiaza unei revoluții” and “Gaudeamus igitur”. He also publishes plays in cooperation with Vasile Rebreanu. The posthumous volume of poetry “Jucătorul de rezervă” comes as surprise for the readers. He decides to renounce to writing fiction and later publishes in Almanahul literar a literary reportage titled “Chipul orașului meu”. As all his generation colleagues, the writer Zaciu had to overcome a terrible dilemma. Educated in the spirit of the Greek-Latin Classicism, necessary to be taken in consideration as a writer, they felt that their achievements would fall as a sand castle under the pressure of the Marxist-Leninist ideology, in a context of a choice between servility and “oblivion”. Beyond the visible attempt of “servility” to the socialist prose, Mircea Zaciu maintains the standards imposed by the culture that formed him. Eventually, Professor Zaciu chooses to abandon the writer career and to dedicate himself to the literary critique and history studies.
