TURKISH FOLK MUSIC INSTRUMENTS IN THE FIFTEEN CENTURY EDVAR BOOKS

Summary/Abstract: Edvâr (Adwar- Arabic for "cycles") books, which are considered as the main source in the history of Turkish music, are known as manuscripts containing information about the musical theories and instruments of the period. In the 15th century, edvâr books were given weight and many manuscripts were written. This study aims to investigate the instruments used in Turkish folk music performance mentioned in the edvâr books of the 15th century, which were considered important for the history of Turkish music. The research is a descriptive study due to the need to determine the current situation, and the literature review model was used. The sources related to 16 manuscripts of 14 musical scholars who lived in the Ottoman lands in the fifteenth century, whose contents can be accessed, were examined and 14 instruments that were deemed to be Turkish folk music instruments were identified. Kopuz (Kopuz-ı Rûmî), Dûtar, Setâr, Şeştây (Şeştâr), Evzân, Tanbûr-i Şirvânîyân, Tanbûr-ı Türkî, Iklığ, Rebab, Gıjek, Kemânçe, Surnâ, Nây-ı balabân, Nây-ı hıyk are among the Turkish folk music instruments mentioned in these edvâr books. It has been seen that these instruments are kept alive with different names or forms in Anatolia today. It is important for the sustainability of this tradition that the Turkish folk music instruments mentioned in the edvâr books in the 15th century have been transferred to the present day with minor changes.
