Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to analyse the discourse produced by a Romanian high school student, while using English as a Foreign Language, at the end of a 12-week public speaking program in order to demonstrate that the discursive strategies, the oratorical techniques as well as the overall oral production skills acquired throughout the public speaking program have had a positive influence on the student’s performance during the official oral examination. The data included in this study show that the scores obtained by this particular student are higher than the scores obtained by students from the same class, age range and level of English but who did not attend the aforementioned program. This specific case study, a salient element of my PhD thesis, is merely a part of a wider and more complex investigation which explores the impact of such public speaking programs on three groups of students in order to establish if the students’ overall ability to speak English as a second language has improved as well as if it has positively influenced the scores obtained in official examinations.
