Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to show how 2nd year students in Dental Medicine at the “Grigore T. Popa” University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Iasi, Romania could benefit from an entire module devote to the idea of teaching communication skills as part of their basic linguistic training. Communication skills are a key skill today, in the context of a diverse and globalized world. Medical students need to understand and acquire knowledge in the field of intercultural communication in order to be able to build up a coherent relationship with their future patients. Good communication skills are also required at the workplace where the dentist is the manager of the whole dental team. Developing good communication skills with the members of the dental team may need a different approach from that of developing a therapeutic relationship with the patient. Last but not least, we can also introduce some basic knowledge on the idea of online communication, referring here to a doctor’s presence online, the risks and benefits of all the technological tools we have access to today. The paper will offer a glimpse on some of the ideas that can be discussed in such courses, along with some examples of activities that can be used in ESP seminars in order to illustrate, in a practical form, the theoretical ideas discussed in such a course.
