THE NEWS DISCOURSE ANALYSIS OF A BREXIT ARTICLE

Summary/Abstract: This study carries on an attempt at news discourse analysis of a newspaper article during the Brexit campaign. This research aims to demonstrate the importance of the structure of a text in a discourse analysis paying attention to an article from a newspaper. The approach adopted is inspired by van Dijk's book News as Discourse (1988) which in addition to his strategies adopted, a media type genre will be adopted for identification of a rhetorical structure used in a newspaper article from Bonini’s work Genre in a Changing World (2009). To sum up, the strategies adopted in news discourse analysis has as a framework the structure of news discourse elaborated by van Dijk without which a qualitative interpretation of the text would be difficult and superficial.
