ELENA CIORTESCU’S “A GUIDE TO BUSINESS COMMUNICATION”

Summary/Abstract: Communication by all available means has always been and, most likely, will always be essential for mankind. In an increasingly globalized world faced with serious crises and challenges, the way we manage to make ourselves understood, to send and receive work-related or personal views, to cooperate towards achieving common goals depends to a great extent on our knowledge and awareness of the surrounding world. Business is one of the most widely used words in the world and covers a wide range of concepts: from person to person interaction, to company to company communication in view of reaching win-win situations, to negotiate, to manage conflicts, to increase profits, the ability of doing business seems to be key to our daily existence. For these reasons, it is no surprise that Business Communication has become a discipline taught at University level, a field of research expanding every day through the work of researchers from all over the world. In Romania, Business Communication and Business English are taught in all Economic and Business Faculties. Also, the field of LSP (Language for Specific Purposes) and particularly, ESP (English for Specific Purposes) have grown significantly due to the fact that all students, irrespective of their field of study have to study a foreign language for at least 4 semesters during their undergraduate studies. Within this context, Elena Ciortescu’s A Guide to Business Communication is a valuable contribution to the specialized literature, particularly in our country where such publications are rather scarce.
