Summary/Abstract: The per Christum – “through Christ” – prayer formula, already authenticated in the New Testament, was part of the common liturgical heritage of all Christians until the 4th century. The genesis and meaning of this formula, which expresses Christ’s mediation in liturgical prayer, were thoroughly scrutinized both in historical and theological terms by J.A. Jungmann. The contribution of this scientist to the rediscovery of the role of the per Christum formula is the subject of this article. At the outset it discusses some of Jungmann’s insightful historical research results, and then presents his theological interpretations of the formula. The last part is an attempt to evaluate Jungmann’s research achievements.
