Summary/Abstract: Caragiale is a man of his times as well as an innovator and a road opener. By taking into account all the writer’s work we can only mention that he places his creation between comic and tragic. Caragiale’s genius shows that he masters both the capacity to ironize destiny and people’s feelings and reactions and the ability to explore his characters’ deep inner world. In our article we are going to explain throughout his work this placement between comic and tragic as the key to his ever-surprising artistic talent. We intend to show that Caragiale’s movement towards the tragic domain of his prose is not a follow up of the naturalistic tendency to explore human inner depths, but a beginning of the psychological analysis, as a mark of a modern understanding of art. In the conclusion of this article we shall identify a few characteristics of the Caragialean style dominated by irony and orality. Even though orality becomes Caragiale’s trademark, there is a subtext attached to each message which, if read correctly, one can discover the true meaning of his creation.
