Summary/Abstract: Reports of the frequency of aggressive behaviour in psychiatric wards are often inconclusive. Some studies report that such situations occur daily, while others stress that it is only occasional. The article presents the results of studies on the opinions of psychologists regarding the manifestations of aggression in psychiatric/therapeutic departments perpetrated against and by the patients. Four levels of the phenomenon were studied: (a) respondents’ opinions of the prevalence of crime against mentally ill people; (b) subjects’ knowledge of acts of aggression and violence from the staff of psychiatric treatment facilities against patients; (c) subjects’ knowledge of acts of aggression and violence from the patients in psychiatric treatment facilities against staff members; and (d) respondents’ knowledge of acts of aggression and violence against patients by other patients in psychiatric treatment facilities.
