Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to discuss and compare penal populism in Polish weekly magazines as an example of the controversy surrounding the Act of the treatment of psychologically disturbed persons posing a threat to the life, health or sexual integrity of other persons. The phenomenon is defined and the process of its formation is analysed. Particular attention is paid to the actions taken in the media that favour the actions of penal populists. Examples of Polish regulations which indicate the hallmarks of penal populism are also discussed. The research focusses on four Polish weeklies: Newsweek, Polityka, Tygodnik Powszechny and DoRzeczy.
