Summary/Abstract: When was written the “Gesta Hungarorum”? The date the work of the anonymous notary public was written, as well as the identification of the author have led in time to prolonged disputes. There are only a few information available about the anonymous notary. Outgoing from this naming, the historians have tried to ascertain under whom of the four Hungarian kings, bearers of this name, the anonymous notary public could have served. Most of the researchers who commented on this question assumed that the anonymous notary public was in the service of one of the two regents of the 12th century which bore this name: either from Bela II (in 1131-1141) or Bela III (in 1172-1196).
