Summary/Abstract: The paper analyses selected passages from the texts of the Neoplatonist philosophers Plotinus and Iamblichus to highlight their common strategy of analysing the activity of thinking. Both philosophers reveal features of an intellectual predisposition and certain noetic presuppositions that enable both specifically philosophical reflection and spiritual theurgical practices. In this way, in the Neoplatonist philosophical tradition itself, it is possible to see the common origins of philosophy and theurgy and avoid attempts to oppose them as essentially incompatible. The principle of Neoplatonic ontological universalism, outlined in the 103rd thesis of Proclus’ Elements of Theology, which states that “everything is in everything but in its own way”, explains how the application of common noetic presuppositions fits in with the different evaluations of the position of the human soul in the hierarchy of reality as understood by representatives of early and the mature Neoplatonism.
