SCHOLASTIC DISCUSSION OF CHRIST’S KNOWLEDGE

Summary/Abstract: The article presents and analyzes medieval concepts of Christ’s knowledge. Many scholastics created a great number of interesting theories of Christ’s knowledge in the Middle Ages before Thomas Aquinas’ theory of the three level Christ’s knowledge dominated the discussion of how Jesus in his human nature came to know reality and God. The most important of these theories were developed in two schools: the Dominican and Franciscan, with special contributions from Aquinas and Bonaventure. In addition to presenting the most important and influential medieval theories of Christ’s knowledge and their philosophical and theological inspirations, the article will present a detailed analysis of the evolution of Thomas Aquinas’ concepts. Thomas’ earlier theories that preceded the final concept of Christ’s knowledge described in the Summa Theologica will be presented and the differences between them will be pointed out.
