Summary/Abstract: Identity represents one of the themes of interest approached by American ethnic writers. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the theme of identity in Toni Morrison’s novel ‘Beloved’, one of the most famous novels written by the African American writer. In her novel, Toni Morrison tackles the problem of identity in the African American community during and after the abolishment of slavery. The paper focuses on two important aspects: the names of the characters in the novel, which represent an important trait in the African American culture and play a definitory role in the shape of their identity and the importance of the female black body in the quest for identity of those whose lives have been changed and influenced by slavery.
