Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the valency of Lithuanian adjectives in the comparative and superlative. This valency is determined not only by the meaning of the adjective, but also by the grammatical properties of the degrees of comparison. In addition to the (obligatory and optional) Participants determined by the meaning of the adjective as a lexical unit, the forms of comparison open a syntactic position for a comparative phrase. Whereas the adjective as such assigns a case form (with or without preposi- tion) to its syntactic participants, its degrees of comparison may either assign a case form (with preposition) to the comparative phrase, or the form of the comparative phrase may be unpredictable in terms of valency.
