Cooperatives and altruism as predictors of the quality of the school climate

Summary/Abstract: The quality of the school climate is influenced by a variety of factors. There is a growing demand for constructive, developmentally appropriate student activities with their peers and helping others, therefore programs focus on strengthening altruistic and cooperative behavior. The school climate is determined by the relationships that students and teachers form; if these relationships are poor, unacceptable behavior may occur. In order to achieve educational goals in the school, it is necessary to create an environment that allows people to realize themselves, help each other, to be self-confident individuals, to develop a positive self-image. It is considered that cooperativeness is a form of prosocial behavior and is characterized by an interactive approach, and refers to the readiness for work activities with other persons, in everyone's best interest. Altruism falls into prosocial behaviors as a special, selfless form of caring for other people. As a term, it is commonly understood as a person's tendency or need to assist others. The aim of this work was to examine the contribution of altruism and cooperation to the quality of the school climate in the function of a more successful teaching process. The research was conducted among an appropriate sample of 823 adolescents (403 males and 420 females) from the area of Tuzla Canton, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The adolescents' age ranged from 16 to 19 years. The research employed a questionnaire for assessing the quality of the school climate (Vessels, 1998), the Roboteg - Šarić altruism scale (1988), and the cooperativeness subscale (Gresham & Elliott, 1990). The findings revealed a significant relationship between altruism and cooperativeness. Altruism and cooperativeness are significant predictors of school climate quality, accounting for 9.8% of the variance in the criteria. There is also a significant relationship between cooperativeness and altruism with students' school performance. The results above highlight the importance of encouraging cooperation and altruism among students in order to achieve a better climate and school success.
