Summary/Abstract: One of the biggest challenges of the 21st century in the field of education is the modernization of the educational process, which will contribute to the development of student competencies in accordance with the requirements of modern society and the needs of the community. School-hour system, frontal form of teaching, verbalism, the dominating role of the teacher, and a theoretical curriculum without adequate practice that would improve the competitiveness of student competencies at modern labor market - tends towards reorganization in the direction of modern social trends. Unlike the existing educational system, which is passive and limited to the classroom, the concept of the modern system should be based on flexibility, innovation, practice and the school should become a place of cognitive, emotional and social development. The new philosophy of living requires a quality that, from the aspect of education, implies the acquisition of competencies of an individual and social character. The purpose of the conducted research was to examine the opinions and attitudes of students about the existing concept of organization and implementation of the educational process, as well as attitudes and opinions about the issue of innovation of educational process based on the model of modern schools and education systems. The sample of respondents consists of 630 students from 34 elementary schools in Sarajevo Canton (different municipalities, city, suburban and district schools) aged from the sixth to the ninth grade. 20 students from one school participated in the research, that is, five students from each class, of different degrees of success. The conducted research is multidisciplinary. A survey questionnaire was used as a research instrument. Based on the conducted research, it is evident that the existing conception of the educational process and the organization of classes in general does not contribute to the development of student competencies and potential in accordance with their capabilities, and does not correspond to the needs of modern society. The results of the research confirmed its insufficient efficiency and indicated the need for reorganization and structural changes in all segments of the educational process.
