Summary/Abstract: The communicative competence in the broadest sense is defined and described as the ability to use language in different communication situations. At the same time, it is observed both from the aspect of grammar and usage competence. In the mother tongue teaching one of the basic goals is the development of communicative competence through the communicative-functional approach to language contents, which implies the affirmation of communication practice, a pragmatic approach to language contents and the functional language teaching with the aim of successful communication in everyday communication situations. All of the above refers to the development of the practical aspect of the language, but the linguistic aspect or theoretical knowledge of the language develops gradually. All of this is affirmed in the curriculum approach to the mother tongue teaching, which is based on the language activities – listening, speaking, reading and writing. In this paper we discussed how the development of communicative competence can be encouraged through various lexical-semantic exercises in the Bosnian language teaching in elementary schools on the basis of typical lexicological phenomena. This functionally enriches the vocabulary and encourages critical thinking about the ambiguity of words and their collocational relations. Students' vocabulary expands and deepens through classification, linking, inclusion and association exercises with different types of lexis. The semantic structure of words is adopted, and basic lexicological phenomena are introduced. It is a prerequisite for the acquisition of language culture in general and the improvement of reading skills.
