Summary/Abstract: By space, we commonly understand ”the objective and universal form of existence of matter, inseparable from matter, a boundless three-dimensional whole which expresses the order of coexistence of real world objects, their position, distance, size, shape and extent.” The problem of space has been a constant preoccupation of philosophers and scientists. ”The favourite themes in philosophy and aesthetics were focused on causality, evolution and determinism”, and the interest in theorizing the metaphysics and transcendence of the concepts of space and time became obsessive for many prominent philosophers and physicists. Over the course of time, spatiality has been suggested in music through a multitude of techniques. Starting from simple gestures (suggested by the extrapolations of the space-related terminology used in the field of sound), such as the exploitation of dynamics, register, timbre etc. and culminating with the introduction of actual spatial elements in the compositional process, this component has been extensively exploited from different aesthetic perspectives.
