Summary/Abstract: The aims of this study are to show how German Press convey Turkey’s internal and foreign policy issues and what kind of a representation of Turkey is given to the German readers in an era of volatile relations between Turkey and German in recent years. In order to do so, the political columns of two national newspapers displaying two different political views; Süddeutsche Zeitung and Die Welt, with regards to their perspective on Turkey will be researched. Political columns published in these renowned newspapers between 1.12.2016 and 1.05.2017 will be analysed via Content Analysis Method. This study includes problems Turkey experienced with Germany within the given period in which important events have taken place. During this period, the internal and foreign policy of Turkey as well as Turkey’s foreign policy moves have been criticized by several media institutions known to have a variety of political views. When analysed, it is seen that the following general views dominate the discussion about Turkey: 1) Turkey is an illiberal country which has turned into an autocracy; 2) Turkey has no place within the EU and 3) There are serious democratic and human rights violations in Turkey. However, this picture drawn and constructed against Turkey was formed long time ago and is still being presented today. This representation of Turkey within German Press has also become a subject to many studies. Hence, by driving from the previous studies done on German Press’ representation and descriptions of Turkey, this article will make a comparison between the past and contemporary representations of Turkey within the German Press.
